These diaries are the first of a series of documents that will be added to this portion
of the site. There is much to be learned from those who travel through a region,
seeing it with fresh eyes. Fort Steele Heritage Town will present a number of
accounts of people visiting and commenting on the Kootenay region. The material
is chosen for its insights and abilities to inform readers of the changes the
Kootenay region has experienced.
R.V. Bing [B. in the journal] was a
land agent working out of Regina, Saskatchewan. He travelled with Bob Bing Jr.
alias "the Kid", Mr.Weeks [W. in the journal] and Mr. Leisle [L. in
the journal]. As most trips like the ones described here, it was the adventure
of the experience that drew the group to the road.
A relative of Mr.
Bing's brought the Bing diaries to us. They are outstanding examples of the auto
touring craze which swept North America in the 'teens and 'twenties of the 20th
century. Road systems were haphazard and conditions were questionable, but North
America's love affair with the automobile had begun. As you will discover, the
personification of the car was already well entrenched by 1921.

and educational purposes only. They are not to be copied or reproduced for any
other purpose without the permission of the owners of the copyright.
