Head Tax Certificate

Rhoda Chow - Head Tax Certificate, 1913
Image courtesy of Trail City Archives, Trail, BC, 1253.

In 1927,at the age of 17, Rhoda Chow married Lee Chiang Kai and moved to
the West Kootenay community of Trail. Here, the couple raised a family
and operated a restaurant.

Despite the discrimination experienced by the Chinese, Mrs. Rhoda (Chow) Lee was supported, encouraged and accepted by many citizens of Trail in her goal to become a Canadian.

Like many other industrious Chinese immigrants, Mrs. Lee became a proud and respected member of Canadian society.
