Kootenay (Wild Horse) Post Office

Established soon after the goldrush, the post office was one of the longest standing institutions and a government presence at Wild Horse Creek. While mail routes to Wild Horse Creek could often be long and circuitous, mail supply to a frontier was promoted as a guaranteed service in the BC colony.

Always encouraged to follow a Canadian route through the mountains, the mail carrier might often need a month's time to deliver a letter from the coast through to Wild Horse Creek. The route Although the advent of the Dewdney trail at first helped to speed up mail delivery, the trail soon fell into disrepair in sections and mail delivery was once more slow.

As the official post office for the region, the Kootenay Post Office remained central to the district until its duties were usurped by the post office located in Griffith's store further up the valley. At that time the building fell into disuse and was reclaimed by the forest as were so many other Wild Horse buildings.
