The Back Streets of Kootenay opened at Fort Steele Heritage Town in British Columbia Canada in the Summer of 2001. The exhibit examined the historic roots of prejudice and intolerance by looking at the experiences of three different groups in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These groups were Sikh and Jewish immigrants and the Ktunaxa First Nation, original inhabitants of the Kootenay region where Fort Steele is located.
The internet allows the presentation of documents and images that users can follow at their own pace and according to their own interests. This website was created to provide access to an expanded collection of documents and images so students, teachers and researchers, as well as the general public, can get the full story of these complex issues.
This project was made possible through the support of Young Canada Works in Heritage Institutions and the Regional District of East Kootenay through the Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Partnership Programme.
