Friends of Fort Steele

The Friends of Fort Steele Society is a registered charity and non-profit organization, incorporated under the BC Society Act in 1987 (BIN 12980 5263 RR0001).

The Society works co-operatively with the Heritage Branch of the British Columbia provincial government in the development and operation of Fort Steele Heritage Town, located 16 km northeast of Cranbrook, in the East Kootenay Region of British Columbia. It is dedicated to conserving, presenting, and teaching the history of Fort Steele and the Kootenays on behalf of the province of BC, the Kootenay community, and the society’s members.

The Friends of Fort Steele consists of a 15 person board of Directors (max), 6-8 year-round staff members, and up to 90 seasonal staff members.


Membership totals approximately 700, representing approximately 2,100 individuals. All are welcome to the Societys Annual General Meeting.  Society members in good standing have voting privileges.  Members who wish to stand for election must be a member in good standing and submit an application to the Nominating Committee no later than two weeks prior to the AGM for review and approval.
